Hello! Two poems this week! I unexpectedly began writing a poem this morning a few hours after waking up. It is a reflection on living life, almost 26 years now, with Type 1 diabetes. After writing the poem, I decided to make a video recording of myself reading the poem to share here at Diabetes Light. At the same time I was setting up my iPhone to record, a good friend of mine suggested the very same thing—that I record myself reading the new poem to share with each of you. She received a recording through text this morning, and felt it had to be shared with you this way too.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your interest and care in Diabetes Light and letting me share my writing with you. It is a great honor and means so very much to me.

Diabetes, You Have Made Me..

Diabetes, you have made me strong

for without you, would I be weak?

Diabetes, you have made me appreciate life

for without you, would I be moving too fast to notice?

Diabetes, you have caused many teardrops to fall from these eyes

but without you, would there be a place for angels to wade?

Diabetes, you have caused me to feel vulnerable

but without you, would I still be as fierce?

Diabetes, you have made me open up to the wonder of life

for without you, would I remain as curious and joyful?

Diabetes, you have made me care more deeply

for without you, would I be calloused and cold?

Diabetes, you have almost taken this life..several times

but without you, would I appreciate the happy times as much?

Diabetes, you have taught me so many things

for without you, where would I be?

Diabetes, you are an amazing teacher

for with or without you, I still have a lot to learn in this life

but I am thankful for the lessons you have taught me thus far.
